Planning a Trip?

Trip Planning

Whether you are going on a multi-day expedition, an evening hunt or just walking with your dog for a few hours on the local trails, it’s always of vital importance to plan and prepare for your trip.  This includes ensuring you have all the necessary gear and equipment, creating a trip plan as well as formally designating someone to look out for your return.  When creating a trip plan, details to keep in mind include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Who is going with you on your trip?

  • When are you leaving?

  • When are you returning and how much leeway should be allowed before the RCMP should be called?

  • From where do you plan to leave (trailhead name or coordinates)?

  • Where do you plan to complete your trip (trailhead name or coordinates)?

  • If camping, at which location(s) do you plan to camp at and what color/model tent will you be using?

  • What is your cell phone number?

  • Will you have another means of communication with you (such as a handheld radio) and if so what channel will you be monitoring?

  • Does anyone in your group have special needs (such as requirements for medication, disabilities, relevant pre-existing health concern such as pregnancy or heart condition)?

  • Who is your primary contact not accompanying you on the trip and what is their phone number?

  • Are you equipped with the Ten Essentials?

These details should all be in writing and be left with your designated check in person who is not accompanying you on your trip.

A handy resource to help with your planning is the online trip plan form available with AdventureSmart.

PLEASE NOTE: The trip plan created at this website is not sent to SPSAR.  Further, SPSAR cannot fulfill the role of your designated check-in person
